RE-CREATION 20 - 29

Re-Creation’s 3rd decade saw the onset of the Muller Years!  Jay and Mary Muller had come to Port Trevorton in 1993, early into the 19th edition, to take over the day-to-day operations of Re-Creation.  As one of the young ladies in RC 19 was too sick to perform full-time, the couple decided Mary would go into the show for the remainder of RC 19.  This decision worked magic on the stage as Mary performed in the secular show and Lorionna Beyers performed in the sacred program.  Both Jay and Mary ended up jumping in the latter half of RC 20 and 21, as well, taking the stage with the remaining cast members to complete a full-cast and produce a dynamite show!

The Muller’s leadership coincided with the Brooks’s direction for the fall of 1993, with the transition of leadership being celebrated at the already planned Re-Union to be held Christmas of that year.  Former members from every edition of Re-Creation showed up to commemorate the legacy of the Brooks’s dedication and to look forward to what the new Muller years might bring to the stage and to the mission.

Right out of the gate, the Muller’s developed a wonderful relationship with RC Vocal and Instrumental Arranger, David Kazee.  David had arranged for Re-Creation while he was performing with Katie Brooks.  He had been with the group since around RC 6David and Mary would direct and engineer all Re-Creation recordings through the 36th edition!  For 16 years, David remained a stalwart friend, a valued confidant and a musical genius, helping Re-Creation excel onstage.  Mary and Dave produced two solo albums for Mary this decade.  Mary and David also started their songwriting partnership as Mary would provide completed lyrics and melodies for new, original songs, and David would arrange the band and executive produce the vocals.

Other decisions included Mr. Muller taking over all directorship of the show, including, costumes, choreography, stage direction, dstage design, speech writing and full presentation.  RC 19b, from January 1994 through July of 1994, started to introduce the fans to Muller’s particular style and direction.  After many, many years, Grant Hollenbach (RC 19 and 20) indicated to Mr. Muller, “You know, I always thought it was brilliant that you called your first full group, RC 20, “On Track”. What a great statement and assurance to the people who have followed Re-Creation for so long.”  “You know what?” Muller replied, “I didn’t even THINK of that notion when I created the show!”  This conversation just proves how integral God’s hand has been in the mission throughout the journey!

This decade also saw the biggest upswing in property.  Before this time, the group practiced choreography and stored all the costumes in the Brooks’ (now the Muller’s) basement.  The mobile trailer on the RC property (which served as the housing for the  RC ladies…and long overdue for demolition!) was replaced by a new office complete with choreography room, sound studio and archive library.  Later, an extension was built to house the costumes.  The larger building, formerly offices, studio and housing for the RC guys, was completely renovated to be the RC Dorm!

“Performing at the Elks National Convention in Re-Creation 22 was like nothing I ever experienced, before or since!  The Navy Pier convention hall was absolutely huge!  Giant screens everywhere, an immense stage with rock-concert lighting and sound and the biggest crowd Re-Creation had ever sung for all focused on US!   Afterward, we were all instructed to help at the merchandise table — and we sold out of everything!  I mean EVERYTHING!  We were literally writing orders on the back of the empty cardboard boxes that carried our CD’s!  Because of the nature of our mission in the vets homes, we were accustomed to performing for a more subdued crowd, with a quiet, but deeply moving response to the show.  The same applied to worship services.  But the Elks’ loud, demonstrative ovation from 20,000 people jumping to their feet, more than once, gave us a ‘high’ unlike anything we had ever felt!”

“I had the pleasure of being part of Re-Creation during the 24th-27th editions. During that time I traveled with the group through the United States, made amazing memories, and met some of the most incredible veterans.  But I think the thing that made the biggest impression on my life was the personal investment made by the Muller family. We were all welcomed in as part of their community, which was such a special blessing for someone like me who was far from home for the first time. We were all their “kids” and their heart and passion for seeing each of us succeed were evident in all that they did for us. So many of the things I learned from them have influenced who I am today, and I thank the Lord for the investment they made, not only in me but in all those who went before and came after my time in the group.”
